Common Medicare Questions in Ohio

When should I enroll in Medicare in Ohio?

Most people enroll during their Initial Enrollment Period — a 7-month window that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after. If your birthday is on the 1st, the window starts a month earlier. Enrolling on time avoids the late Part B penalty (10% per 12 months delayed, for life) unless you have other creditable coverage.

Do I need to enroll in Medicare if I'm still working at 65?

Usually no — if your employer (or your spouse's employer) has 20 or more employees and provides creditable coverage, you can typically delay Part B without penalty. When that coverage ends you get an 8-month Special Enrollment Period to sign up. The rules are different for small employers (under 20 employees), where Medicare becomes the primary payer at 65.

What's the difference between Medigap and Medicare Advantage in Ohio?

Medigap (a Medicare Supplement) pairs with Original Medicare and covers most of the deductibles and coinsurance Medicare leaves behind, with no network restrictions — any provider that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare with a private plan, usually with networks, and often bundles drug coverage and extras. Ohio does not have a Medigap "birthday rule," so timing your initial purchase matters more here than in some states.

What happens if I miss my Medicare enrollment window?

You can still enroll during the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31 each year), with coverage starting the month after you sign up. Late-enrollment penalties may apply for Part B and Part D — they are permanent surcharges on your premium. Creditable coverage during the gap can waive the penalty.

When is Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)?

AEP runs October 15 through December 7 each year. It is the one window when anyone on Medicare can switch plans, change between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, or pick up Part D drug coverage. Plan changes take effect January 1. Your current plan sends an Annual Notice of Change in September that lists every change for the upcoming year — read it before AEP starts.
