Medicare Scams Are On the Rise—Here’s How to Stay Safe

Know the warning signs of Medicare scams and how to protect yourself or a loved one.

Know the warning signs of Medicare scams and how to protect yourself or a loved one.

Scammers are getting more sophisticated—and Medicare is one of their top targets. Whether it’s a fake phone call, a phishing email, or a deceptive mailer, the goal is the same: get your personal information or your money.

Here’s how to stay safe.

Spot the Red Flags

1. Medicare won’t call you unsolicited
If someone calls saying they’re from Medicare and asks for your personal info, it’s a scam. Medicare doesn’t make cold calls.

2. “Free” medical equipment or tests
Offers for free back braces, genetic testing, or medical supplies often come with a catch—your Medicare number. That’s all scammers need to file fraudulent claims.

3. High-pressure language
Anyone pushing you to “act now” or claiming your benefits are “about to expire” is not legitimate. A real agent will never rush you.

4. Emails or texts with links
Don’t click on anything unless you know the sender. Official Medicare communication rarely comes via text, and never includes clickable links without explanation.

How You Can Protect Yourself

  • Keep your Medicare card in a safe place
  • Don’t share your Medicare number with anyone you didn’t contact first
  • Report suspicious calls or emails to 1-800-MEDICARE

Bottom line: If it sounds too good to be true—or if something feels off—hang up and call someone you trust.
